OLED Utilization Ramps Up in 2H

The combination of normal seasonality and pandemic-induced weakness in the smartphone market had utilization (UT) rates at OLED fabs at low levels in the first half of 2020. UTs rebounded in Q3 and are expected to continue high in Q4, according to the latest update to DSCC’s Quarterly OLED and Mobile LCD Fab Utilization Report released this week. The report details monthly capacity and utilization for OLED lines and LTPS LCD lines, with capability to sort by parameters such as country, substrate type, supplier, form factor and TFT generation.

BOE Acquiring CEC Panda Fabs in Nanjing and Chengdu

BOE Technology Group, Ltd (BOE) announced this week the proposed acquisition of majority stakes in two of the four CEC Panda LCD fabs in China, the Gen 8.5 fab in Nanjing and the Gen 8.6 fab in Chengdu. While no specific transfer price was stated, a minimum price for each fab was described. While some uncertainty remains because the transactions will still need approval from BOE shareholders, this is the most complete description thus far for the sale of CEC Panda assets, and it looks likely to proceed.

BOE Bounces Back from COVID in Q2 to Finish Strong First Half

BOE Technologies, Inc (BOE) issued its 2020 Interim Report this week with financial results for the first half of 2020. Revenues, which had declined in Q1 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, bounced back to set a record in Q2. While much of the flat panel display industry has suffered losses before and during the pandemic, BOE posted profits, and the company has posted a profit in every quarter since Q2 2016.

Display Equipment Revenues Rise 6% Q/Q in Q2’20 Based on Survey of 35 Suppliers

We have finalized our look at the financial results for 35 publicly traded display equipment suppliers in our Quarterly Display Supply Chain Financial Health Report and found that revenues grew 6% Q/Q to $1.76B. Due to COVID-19, travel restrictions and quarantines, it was a tough quarter. But display equipment companies managed to grow. On a Y/Y basis, revenues were down 20% and were down for the 6th straight quarter. However, we are expecting to see Q/Q AND Y/Y growth in Q3’20 and Q4’20 as tools not fully installed in 1H’20 are recognized in 2H’20 along with an already expected to be strong 2H’20.

China Star Acquires Samsung Suzhou

August 31, 2020

TCL Technology Group, the corporate parent of China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT), announced this week an agreement to acquire Samsung Display’s assets in Suzhou, China, including a Gen 8.5 fab and a co-located LCD module plant. Under the deal, TCL will pay Samsung more than $1 billion, but the majority of the money is returned to TCL as an investment, and Samsung Display will become a minority shareholder in a TCL subsidiary.

Summer Sprout Develops Deep Red Phosphorescent OLED Emitters for Automotive Lighting. Potential Competitor to Universal Display

One of the many important developments to come out of the SID DisplayWeek symposium was a paper by a potential competitor for Universal Display Corporation in the field of phosphorescent OLED emitters. The paper was given in session 83, OLED Displays II, and entitled Optimization of High-Performance Deep-Red OLEDs Using Tandem Structure for Automotive Lighting Application, given by Huiqing Pang of Beijing Summer Sprout Technology Co, Ltd. The paper describes Summer Sprout's development of a red phosphorescent emitter for automotive OLED lighting, and lists six authors with Huiqing Pang as the lead. Dr. Pang is identified as a Vice President of Beijing Summer Sprout Technology Co., Ltd.
