Apple has cancelled its MicroLED project for the Apple Watch. The decision was confirmed by LED supplier ams OSRAM in a press release announcing the “unexpected cancellation of a cornerstone project” for its MicroLED program. According to our supply chain sources, both LGD and SDC started shipping OLED iPad panels in February. The initial plan was for LGD to be the sole source at 12.9” with LGD and SDC splitting the 11.1” orders. Then, we heard in the press that only SDC was going to supply 11.1” panels due to reduced demand resulting from the high panel OLED panel prices derived from being the first OLED tablet panels with LTPO, tandem stacks and glass thinning resulting in lower yields, etc.
