US TV Price Inflation Hits Record High

The increase in LCD TV panel prices has led to an unprecedented increase in TV prices in the US, according to the most recent data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Consumer Price Index (CPI). In June 2021, for the first time in history, the CPI for televisions exceeded the overall CPI as TV prices increased by 8% compared to June 2020.

Samsung, LGE Profits Keep Rolling in Q2 Based on Preliminary Results

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics issued preliminary Q2 2021 revenue and earnings results last week. Both companies continue to roll, with Samsung posting a 53% Y/Y increase in operating profit and LG reporting its best-ever Q2 for both revenues and operating profits. Both companies fought off headwinds from exchange rates, as the Korean won strengthened by more than 8% Y/Y during Q1.

LCD TV Panel Prices Peaking

Our latest update and forecast of LCD TV prices confirms our view of one month ago that prices are peaking in June or July 2021 and will decline for the rest of the year. The demand surge which resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic has eased and industry supply has caught up to demand. Even with the declines in the second half, prices at year-end will remain higher than they were in December 2020 and dramatically higher than their all-time lows.

Q2 OLED Supply/Demand Update – Oversupply to Persist

We have updated DSCC’s Quarterly OLED Supply/Demand and Capital Spending Report for Q2 2021, with DSCC’s latest capacity outlook for the industry and our forecast for OLED panel demand. As we have reported for more than a year now, OLED for smartphones (technically, for small & medium applications) continues to have a substantial oversupply which is expected to persist for years. We have revised our outlook for OLED TVs on both the supply and demand sides. We continue to expect a modest oversupply in 2021-2025 with utilization below 90%, but above 80% throughout the forecast period.

OLED Panel Revenues Forecasted to Exceed $60B in 2025 Helped by Increased IT Market Penetration

DSCC has upgraded both its near-term and long-term OLED forecasts. In its latest Quarterly OLED Shipment Report, DSCC has raised its revenue outlook for 2021 by 9% to $42.5B on increased OLED smartphone volumes at higher prices helped by the driver IC shortages as well as higher OLED notebook volumes as Samsung Display has raised its OLED notebook PC panel target beyond 5M units.

OLED smartphone panel revenues will increase by 39% Y/Y for the first half of 2021, according to the latest update of the DSCC Quarterly Advanced Smartphone Features Report. The Q2 update of this report gives actual shipments for Q1 2021 and DSCC’s estimates for Q2 through Q4 2021, plus DSCC’s forecast for 2021-2025 for different form factors for OLED smartphone panels, with detailed figures for units, revenue, area, average selling price (ASP) and other parameters with splits by panel supplier, substrate (rigid/flexible) and brand. The stock market was down this week on concerns about the Federal Reserve raising interest rates to ward off inflation. Even though the discussion about a rate increase suggests that the earliest date for an increase would be the end of 2022, the notion of increasing interest rates and inflation hit stock prices which were at all-time highs.
