iPhone 16 Series Panel Shipments Start Strong with 20% Higher Volumes than the iPhone 15 Series

As we approach the end of August and with a few weeks to go until Apple announces the iPhone 16 series, the latest release of the Monthly Flagship Smartphone Display Tracker shows that cumulative panel shipments through July for the iPhone 15 Series were 6% higher in 2023 – 2024 versus the iPhone 14 series during the same period in 2022 - 2023. Display Glass Market Jumped in Q2 But Falling in 2H’24

Glass makers shipped 172M m2 of display glass in Q2’24, an increase of 12% Q/Q and 5% Y/Y according to the latest update to DSCC’s Display Glass Report, released last week. China’s portion of worldwide display glass demand increased to an all-time high of 73% in Q2’24. With the coming closure of the largest fab outside China, Sharp’s Sakai Display Products Gen 10, China’s share of display glass demand will only increase. OLED Panel Shipments Rise 50% Y/Y in Q2’24 on >100% Growth in Tablets and Monitors and High Double-Digit Growth in Smartphones and TVs

As revealed in DSCC’s latest release of the OLED Shipment Report – Flash Edition, OLED panel shipments increased 13% Q/Q and 50% Y/Y in Q2’24 after declining 20% Q/Q and increasing 50% Y/Y in Q1’24. OLED Tablet Panel Shipments Surge in Q2’24, 2024 Volumes Expected to More than Triple

OLED tablet panel shipments rose 142% Q/Q and 356% Y/Y in Q2’24 to a record high as Apple launched its highly anticipated 11.1” and 13” iPad Pro’s which feature the tablet industry’s first tandem OLED stack panels along with the thinnest tablets produced to date. Apple dominated the OLED tablet panel market in Q2’24 with a 72% share followed by Huawei at 13% and Samsung at 9%. The 13” OLED iPad Pro led the market on a panel procurement basis for the second straight quarter with a slight edge over the 11.1” OLED iPad Pro. Each model had a 36% share in Q2’24. The #3 model on a panel procurement basis was the Huawei Mate Pad Pro 13.2” at 5%. LG Display and Samsung Display split the Q2’24 market on a panel supplier basis with a 41% share each.Read More

Foldable Smartphone Panels Set New Record High in Q2’24 Helped by Earlier Launch of Samsung Foldables

Q2’24 was a record quarter for foldable smartphone panel shipments, rising 151% Q/Q and 126% Y/Y to nearly 10M panels. Panel shipments were 12% higher than the previous high recorded in Q3’23. The primary cause of the surge was the earlier launch of the latest Samsung foldables, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6, which started panel production and shipments one month earlier than last year. Samsung accounted for 48% of all foldable smartphone panel procurement in Q2’24, well ahead of Huawei’s Q2’24 share of 29%. Samsung and Huawei reversed positions in Q2’24 with Huawei leading Samsung in foldable panel procurement in Q1’24 with a 53% to 21% advantage. By model, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 led in foldable panel procurement with a 32% share followed by the Z Fold 6 at 15%. Huawei had the next two highest volume models, the Pocket 2 and Mate X5, each with a double digit share. The Honor Magic V Flip was the #5 foldable in Q2’24 on a panel procurement basis with a 4% share. Clamshells accounted for a 63% share, up from 53% in Q1’24. Display Industry Oversupply Returns as Fab Utilization Decreases in Q3’24

After a stronger than expected spring quarter, the display industry is slowing down in the summer months, and we expect the slowdown to continue through the end of the year, according to the latest release of DSCC’s Quarterly All Display Fab Utilization Report issued last week. Inventory in the downstream display supply chain has been filled, and with no clear demand drivers until the holiday season the supply capacity of the industry far exceeds demand. DSCC’s latest Quarterly MiniLED Backlight Technologies, Cost and Shipment Report revealed that MiniLED has become an important role and a strategic resource in both the display and LED industries. MiniLED shipments were 4.45M units in Q1’24 and are expected to remain flat in Q2’24. Total shipments for MiniLED panels are expected to reach more than 19M units in 2024.Read More
