Q1 OLED Supply/Demand Update – Oversupply in Phones to Persist to 2025

We have updated DSCC’s Quarterly OLED Supply/Demand and Capital Spending Report for Q1, providing DSCC’s latest capacity outlook for the industry and our forecast for OLED panel demand. As we have reported for more than a year now, OLED supply for smartphones (technically, for Small & Medium applications) continues to significantly exceed demand which is expected to persist for years. However, the supply growth keeps coming primarily due to Chinese government subsidies. We have revised our outlook for OLED TVs on both the supply and demand sides, and we continue to expect high utilization at OLED TV fabs.

OLED Utilization Expected to Improve in 2020 vs. 2019

Utilization of flexible OLED lines across the display industry has been stubbornly low throughout 2018 and 2019 because of industry oversupply, but utilization rates are expected to improve in 2020 while remaining far short of full UT%, according to the latest update to DSCC’s Quarterly OLED and Mobile LCD Fab Utilization Report released this week. The report details monthly capacity and utilization for OLED lines and LTPS LCD lines, with capability to sort by parameters such as country, substrate type, supplier, form factor and glass size.

Coronavirus Week of 2/17-2/23

While the numbers of cases and fatalities from the coronavirus in China were lower than last week, there were several reports of outbreaks in new regions that raised concerns that the virus would spread globally. As of Saturday, February 23rd, there were more than 76,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus worldwide, and more than 2,300 fatalities.

February 10th Update on the Coronavirus and the Display Industry - Updated on February 12th

The coronavirus has now killed 908 people in China, surpassing the 774 killed worldwide due to the SARS epidemic. The pace of infections has slowed, but doctors believe it can still re-accelerate. The highest number of deaths from the virus in a single day was recorded on Sunday the 9th at 97. However, the number of people recovering from the virus exceeded the number of deaths for the 10th day in a row at 356 in the Hubei province on Sunday, so there is hope that deaths from the virus will slow. Nonetheless, there are 40,171 confirmed infections in China with 3,062 new cases recorded over the last 24 hours.

DSCC’s New Report on Quantum Dot Technology Coming Soon

Quantum Dot (QD) display technology was first introduced to enable LCDs deliver a Wide Color Gamut (WCG) and high brightness. Samsung pioneered the technology and launched the ‘QLED TVs’ in 2015. QLED TVs use LCD technology with a blue backlight and a quantum dot enhancement film (QDEF). This technology combined with High Dynamic Range (HDR) allowed the performance of premium LCDs to compete with the performance of OLED TVs.
