SID/DSCC Business Conference Brings AR/VR Session to San Jose

Austin, TX -

The SID/DSCC Business Conference will include an Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) session for a second consecutive year. Unlike last year, the session will take place on-site at the San Jose Convention Center and will feature the following speakers:

  • Dr. Guillaume Chansin, Director of Display Research, DSCC
  • Andrew Sculley, CEO, eMagin Corporation
  • Dr. Zahir Alpaslan, Director, Business Unit Product Development, GlobalFoundries
  • Reza Chaji, CEO, VueReal

The Business Conference is part of Display Week 2022, the world's leading event focused on emerging electronic display and visual information technologies from concept to market.

The Society for Information Display (SID) awarded the organization and execution of the SID Business Conference to DSCC for the sixth straight year. With over 300 attendees annually, the Business Conference is the largest and longest running event dedicated to the business aspects of the $165B display industry.

The Business Conference traditionally covers the main market segments for displays, including Smartphones, TVs and Monitors. AR/VR now has its own session to reflect the increasing levels of interest and investment in this category.

“AR/VR has become the new battleground for display technologies,” according to Guillaume Chansin, Director of Display Research at DSCC. “Since the display is such a critical component in these applications, there is an opportunity to innovate and capture more value.” DSCC will present fresh insights and forecasts from its upcoming report on the topic.

Micro OLED is increasingly seen as a potential candidate for high-end VR headsets. The main benefit is a reduction in size of the panels and optics. However, VR requires significant improvements in brightness levels. Last year, eMagin achieved a milestone by demonstrating a luminance of 10,000 nits on a full-color Micro OLED display. The conference is an opportunity to hear directly from the company how this technology can disrupt the industry and enable a new generation of headsets.

“There is renewed excitement in metaverse driven by the largest companies in the world that are investing both in technology and people to build the next generation of VR and AR devices”, according to Andrew Sculley, CEO of eMagin. “Based on their feedback we built the worlds brightest full color OLED microdisplay and will drive our roadmap to meet the needs of consumer, military, industrial and medical customers deploying AR, VR, night vision goggles, pilot helmets, range finders, surgical equipment and instruments, hunting scopes and other. The SID/DSCC business conference is timely to get the most out of this market trend by learning, sharing and networking with the best minds in the industry.”

One particularity of microdisplays is that they require silicon backplanes made by semiconductor foundries. This means that the semiconductor industry has a key role to play in the development of new display technologies for AR/VR. Dr. Zahir Alpaslan currently focuses on roadmap and product development for display and imager markets at GlobalFoundries. His talk will offer a perspective on MicroLED displays, with a detailed look at manufacturing requirements and supply chain.

VueReal also develops MicroLED technologies and has previously demonstrated and commercialized transparent displays for automotive and aerospace customers. VueReal is now targeting the AR market with high resolution microdisplays.

“VueReal offers solutions for personalized AR enabling super-compact full-color high-resolution low-power fashionable wearable glasses, lenses and more”, says Reza Chaji, CEO of VueReal. “Furthermore, the VueReal solution for mass AR is based on high-transparent (>70%), high-brightness, and large-area displays.”

Other companies speaking at the conference include Applied Materials, Universal Display, LG Display, Intel and Nanosys.

The 2022 conference will consist of both on-site and recorded talks. Attendees can choose to attend in person or virtually.

The in-person sessions will be streamed and recorded on May 9th. A second day’s worth of virtual talks will be available on demand after the event. The agenda for the conference, including a list of confirmed speakers can be found on the DSCC event website.

Display Week will take place from May 9th to May 13th at the San Jose Convention Center. The SID/DSCC Business Conference will kick-off Display Week on the first day. There are attendance options for both on-site and virtual attendees.
